The Role


We have a vacancy for a full-time Team Assistant to join our busy and well respected Dispute Resolution team based in our Colchester Office.

The Team

You will join the highly driven Colchester Dispute Resolution Team which advises on all types of professional and commercial disputes as well as private client matters, providing practical advice to companies and individuals on the best way forward when trying to resolve disputes. 

The Candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join the team to help to deliver a proactive, secretarial support service to our Fee Earning team.  Previous legal secretarial experience is essential to enable the successful candidate to hit the ground running and provide support to your allocated Fee Earners as well as other members of the department.  

Main Duties and responsibilities

•    Organisational Support
•    Client Relationship and Business Development; acting as a first point of contact for Fee Earners, providing a first-rate service to clients, both internal and external, in a timely and professional manner, presenting a positive image of the Birkett Long at all times.
•    Document Production; creating typed work of a high quality, formatting in accordance with house style, aware of the layout of documents, forms and letters and produces these with accuracy and at a high speed.
•    Financial Risk Management; preparing Anti-Money Laundering documentation and obtains relevant documentation from clients in a timely manner, as required by Fee Earners.

General Duties/Personal Qualities
•    Excellent timekeeping with the ability to prioritise work effectively.
•    Flexible, reliable and cooperative with a professional approach to work.
•    Ability to work as a positive, friendly and helpful team player.
•    Communicates in a positive and constructive manner.
•    Interacts in good faith and demonstrates effective listening.

•    Offers suggestions on possible improvements in working practices. 
•    Liaises with Fee Earner/Team Leader regarding overload/underload of work and being prepared to assist other team members or departments if required to cover holidays, sickness and heavy workloads.

We have a vacancy for a NQ to 4 year PQE dispute resolution Solicitor, who ideally has experience of dealing with contentious property and/or agricultural work, to join our highly regarded Dispute Resolution Team.  The position is full-time and based in our Colchester office.

The Team

You will join the highly driven Colchester Dispute Resolution Team which advises on all types of professional and commercial disputes as well as private client matters, providing practical advice to companies and individuals on the best way forward when trying to resolve disputes. You will be advising on varied commercial disputes involving property, contracts, negligence, shareholders, insolvency, partners and directors.  

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have proven experience in handling a mixed caseload of commercial and private client dispute resolution work. Ideally you will have experience in commercial and residential landlord and tenant disputes as well as other property disputes.  

You will have the ability to deliver succinct high-quality advice, excellent client and team communication skills, drafting and negotiation skills and a desire to play a key role in the future development of the team.

This role is an excellent opportunity for progression. The candidate will be well supported in developing their own caseload and career. 

The role will involve marketing and business development and therefore the candidate must be flexible enough to work outside normal office hours when required and preferably have their own vehicle.

Paralegal - Dispute Resolution
Colchester Office

The Role
We have a vacancy for a full-time Paralegal to join our busy and well respected Dispute Resolution Team in our Colchester office principally to assist in a range of debt recovery matters.

The role will also include supporting the Team with a varied caseload of litigation files including some low to modest value personal injury work and residential property possession claims. 

The successful candidate will run their own files, under supervision from other members of the Team and ultimately the Team Leader, to include conducting client meetings, producing letters of advice, dealing with written and telephone enquiries from clients, debtors, tenants and the Court as well as undertaking legal research exercises.

Some marketing and business development will also be expected of the successful candidate.

The Team
You will join the fast-paced Colchester Dispute Resolution Team which advises on all types of professional and commercial disputes as well as private client matters, providing practical advice to companies and individuals on the best way forward when trying to resolve disputes with shareholders, partners, directors, other companies (including insurers) and individuals (eg. neighbours and other land owners).  

The Team works with clients in relation to commercial contract disputes, insolvency issues, professional negligence claims, landlord and tenant matters, commercial/agricultural/residential property disputes, personal injury claims and disputes arising from the breakdown of business relationships. 

The Candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join our highly regarded team of specialist lawyers.

Some previous experience within a similar role would be advantageous but is not essential.

The ideal candidate will have:

Parking Attendant – Marketing Events

The Role
This is an opportunity to work supporting the Marketing team by managing the car park at Marketing events held at the Birkett Long Colchester office.

The role includes:

  • Meeting and greeting car park users to include staff, clients and event delegates on arrival
  • Ensuring that those with authorised access park in the correct bay
  • Managing numbered parking bays from a bookings list
  • Ensuring there is no unauthorised users in the car park
  • Redirection of unauthorised users to nearest car parks

The Candidate
Birkett Long is looking for an individual who can work flexibly to cover the Colchester office car park at around 12 events per year to include early starts of around 7am/8am with each shift lasting no longer than 3 hours. This role would suit someone seeking casual and part-time work. Previous experience, ideally gained in a customer service role would be beneficial.

Trade Mark Attorney

Colchester Office

 

The Role

We have an exciting new role for a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney to join our fast-growing Intellectual Property team in the Colchester office of a legal 500 law firm. The role may be adapted to suit either part-time or full-time candidates.

The Candidate

We are prepared to take applications from a variety of experience levels, from newly qualified upwards.

 

A following is not necessary as we have a great deal of ongoing work. We will work with you to help you build a following locally and further afield and will provide you with an interesting caseload from day one.

You will be involved in both domestic and international filings as well as the prosecuting and monitoring of trade marks, along with some very interesting opposition and cancellation work. You will ideally have some experience of drafting license agreements.

We can provide you with a varied and nourishing diet of contentious and non-contentious work, with some unusually high-profile clients. The mixture of corporate and private client work will serve to harness and develop your written and oral communication skills.

An eye for detail and the ability to work under pressure are important and an interest in communicative, collaborative work is essential.

You will be passionate to deliver succinct, high quality advice with excellent client and team communication skills.

The role will involve marketing and business development and therefore the ideal candidate must be flexible enough to work outside normal office hours when required and preferably have their own vehicle as well as a clean driving licence.
