Construction Solicitor Vacancy (non contentious)

Chelmsford Office

The Firm

Based in Essex, with offices in Chelmsford, Basildon and Colchester, Birkett Long focuses on people – our clients, our employees, our business partners and those in our local communities.

We are a modern thinking Legal 500 law firm and this is an ideal opportunity to join a successful and thriving practice.

Birkett Long offers a competitive package including 25 days holiday, a flexitime system, private health cover and income protection.

The Role

We have an excellent opportunity for a Non-Contentious Construction Solicitor ideally with 2-8 years PQE to join our highly regarded multidisciplinary Construction team.

The position is full time and will be based in the Chelmsford office and, subject to work commitments, there will be the opportunity for some working from home, if desired, in line with the Firm’s working from home guidelines.

You will be advising on, drafting and negotiating construction documentation including contracts, sub-contracts, collateral warranties, professional appointments and other ancillary documents. This includes advising on many different standard forms such as JCT and NEC, together with bespoke documentation.

Our clients include developers, consultants, main contractors, and specialist subcontractors. We advise on projects throughout England and Wales as well as abroad. The turnover of companies we act for mainly range between £5 million and £25 million. A lot of our work is on commercial buildings and blocks of apartments. We negotiate appropriate contract documents with funders of our clients. We advise Subcontractors on the proposed amendments to standard form contracts and the risks that are being taken on. We advise on professional appointments and negotiate terms taking into account insurance requirements.

Experience of contentious construction matters would be useful but not essential. A balance of both types of work could be provided but the majority of work would be non-contentious.

We have a good range of core clients who give us repeat work. We also have many clients who we are sure could be developed further. The firm also has expertise in environmental and energy work which we are looking to develop. We have seen substantial growth in construction work over the last 18 months which has already led to successful recruitment. You will be expected to assist with business development to capitalise on and continue the growth of the team.

The Team

The team is multidisciplinary involving dispute resolution, commercial property, employment, development, environmental and energy expertise. You would initially join the highly driven South Essex Dispute Resolution team which includes our Construction lawyers, which is where the current pure non-contentious construction work is undertaken.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have proven experience (ideally a minimum of 2 years PQE) and enjoy handling a caseload covering non contentious construction work. You will have experience of all the major standard forms of contract as well as bespoke construction documentation.

You will have the ability to deliver succinct high-quality advice, excellent client and team communication skills, drafting and negotiation skills. You will need to use your own initiative and provide good commercial advice to clients. You will be computer literate, able to use a case management system and be able to type.

The role will involve marketing and business development and therefore the ideal candidate must be flexible enough to work outside normal office hours when required and preferably have their own vehicle as well as a clean driving licence.
