Trade Mark Attorney

Colchester Office

The Role

We have an exciting new role for a pragmatic and driven Trade Mark Attorney to join our new Intellectual Property team in the Colchester office. Applications for the position will be considered on either a full-time or part-time basis.

This is a rare opportunity to be a key part of a fast-growing Intellectual Property team within a Legal 500 law firm. The role will involve providing practical advice to a broad portfolio of clients.


The Candidate

You will be a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney with the ambition and commercial acumen to assist in driving the new IP department forward. We are prepared to consider applications from a variety of experience levels.

You will be involved with all aspects of managing the department’s portfolio including domestic and international filing, prosecuting, monitoring of trade marks as well as opposition and cancellation work. You will ideally have some experience of drafting license agreements. Expect to get a varied diet of contentious and non-contentious work.

You will be passionate to deliver succinct, high quality advice with excellent client and team communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have an eye for detail, work with high levels of accuracy and possess the ability to work under pressure, prioritising effectively.

The ideal candidate must be flexible enough to work outside normal office hours when required and preferably have their own vehicle as well as a clean driving licence.

Paralegal/Legal Executive Vacancy

• Inheritance Tax planning;
• Probate;

The Role
We have a vacancy for a full-time Paralegal or CILEX to join our busy and well respected South Essex Wills, Trust and Probate Team split between our Chelmsford and Basildon offices.

The role will involve supporting the team with a varied caseload and general fee earning and administration duties. Previous experience is desirable but not essential. The main duties will include;

• To assist in taking calls
• To assist in the production and sending out Will packs to clients
• Liaising with clients and drafting Wills under the supervision of a senior fee earner
• Assisting with the administrative tasks and drafting of documents in Probate, Office of Public Guardian and Trust matters

The role will also involve some marketing and business development.

The Candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join our highly regarded team of specialist lawyers. The role will involve travel between the Chelmsford and Basildon offices and therefore you will need to hold a Full UK driving licence.

Some previous experience within a similar role would be advantageous but is not essential.

The ideal candidate will have:
• excellent timekeeping and communication skills, both verbal and written;

• a positive, friendly and helpful approach to being a team player;

Trainee Financial Adviser 2019


We have an exciting opportunity for an exceptional candidate to join our Birkett Long IFA Team as a Trainee Financial Adviser as part of our Trainee Adviser programme.
This is a two year structured programme which will involve working closely with our highly experienced Financial Planning Managers who will help you to both enhance the skills required to develop your career and undertake the Chartered Insurance Institute Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning.
The position is full time and will initially be based in our Colchester Office although it may be necessary to work at our other two offices; therefore flexibility is essential.
The ideal candidate will:
• Be someone with an interest in financial planning or have experience in the Financial Services sector;
• Be self motivated;
• Be able to multi-task and work under pressure;
• Have excellent communication, and interpersonal skills, and empathy;
• Have a professional attitude and appearance;
• Be competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook;
• Be flexible and reliable;
• Have excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage own work and to prioritise;
• Have strong attention to detail;
• Have the ability to work as part of a team as well as on your own;
• Have a “can do” attitude to work.
A genuine passion for delivering excellent client service is mandatory.
A willingness to learn is also essential as additional study will be required outside of working hours.
Relevant industry experience would be advantageous but not essential. Full training and practical support will be provided with the exceptional backing of one of the leading Law and Financial Services firms in Essex.

We have a vacancy for a full-time Conveyancing Assistant to join our busy and well respected Residential Real Estate team in our Colchester office.

The Department
You will join the fast paced Residential Real Estate team which provides a wide range of services inclusive of:

• advice and guidance on buying, selling and renting a property;
• mortgages; how much is outstanding and redemption penalties;
• terms of tenancy and written agreements;
• legal transfers of property.

The Candidate

We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join the team to help to deliver a proactive, legal support service to our Fee Earning team.  Previous conveyancing secretarial or administrative assistance within a property environment is mandatory to enable all correspondence and documents to be produced to the required standard and on time. Familiarity with how a property file runs from beginning to end including experience of drafting contracts and registering titles would be also be advantageous.

Legal Support Assistant

We have a vacancy for a full time Legal Support Assistant to join our busy and well respected Commercial Real Estate team in our Colchester Office. 

The Department
You will join the fast paced Commercial Real Estate team which provides a wide range of services inclusive of landlord and tenant, lending and finance, development and investment.

The Candidate
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and professional applicant to join the Commercial Real Estate team to help to deliver a proactive, secretarial support service to our Fee Earning team.  Previous secretarial experience in Real Estate for this role and knowledge of document production and/or track changes would be a distinct advantage.

Main Duties and responsibilities
Organisational Support
• Effective and productive diary and email management; awareness of Fee Earners workloads to plan ahead with minimal supervision.
• Deal with post, internal and external, distribute and action as required.
• Deal with fee earner filing, to do lists and case management duties.
• Retain up to date knowledge and understanding of Fee Earners matters to enable a proactive support service.
• Maintain a professional attitude and effective communications
• Process relevant on time with accuracy and minimal supervision.
• Undertake basic research (online or otherwise) for Fee Earner when required.
• File opening and closing with minimal supervision.

Client Relationship and Business Development
• Act as a first point of contact for Fee Earners; providing a first-rate telephone support service; taking enquiries and relaying these to the Fee Earner.
• Organise business development meetings and events for Fee Earners; assist in the production of business development materials in liaison with the Marketing team.

Document Production
• Proof read all documents for spelling
• Use initiative to compose drafts and send correspondence
• Preparation of bills and undertaking of the Firm’s procedures in billing, AML and Debt Management.
• Deal with Time Recording matters as required by Fee Earners.
