Business Team Vacancy - Basildon Office

The Firm

The Role
We have a full time vacancy for an experienced 4 + years PQE Solicitor to join our highly regarded Commercial and Corporate Finance Business team based in our Basildon office. 

You will be part of our multidisciplinary Business Team and demonstrate an aptitude for corporate commercial work.  You should have experience of handling transactions, advising on corporate structures, drafting commercial contracts, shareholder agreements and terms of business.

Ideally you will have experience in or an interest in developing expertise in Intellectual Property being able to advise or developing your ability to advise on intellectual property rights, digital and e-commerce matters, software and hardware support contracts, website design and maintenance agreements and similar related matters. 

The Team
Our highly regarded team acts for a variety of clients from SME’s to multinational corporations. Team members have each carved a niche specialism within the corporate commercial discipline adding further variety to the work and the successful candidate will be supported to develop their own specialisms.  The team assists clients with buying and selling companies and businesses, shareholder and joint venture agreements,  restructuring and corporate advice and reviewing and preparing commercial agreements. 

The Opportunity

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have proven experience in handling a busy caseload and a minimum of 4 years PQE.

You will have the ability to deliver succinct high quality advice, excellent client and team communication skills, drafting and negotiation skills and a desire to play a key role in the future development of the firm and the team.

You will need to use your own initiative and provide good succinct commercial advice to clients. You will be computer literate, able to use a case management system and be able to type.

The role will involve marketing and business development and therefore the ideal candidate must be flexible enough to work outside normal office hours when required and preferably have their own vehicle as well as a clean driving licence.

Systems Engineer

The Department
This is an exciting opportunity to join the IT and Business Operations Team which provides an extensive IT support service to the firm.  This role is best suited to someone who has a genuine interest in the legal or financial services sector and is keen to develop new skills and progress their career.  The role is crucial to the overall productivity of the firm.

The Role
We have a full time vacancy for a Systems Engineer to join our IT and Business Operations Team in our Colchester office. Although based in the Colchester office, travelling to our other offices will be required at times.

The role will include:

• To respond and service 1st and 2nd line Helpdesk support calls at Desktop and Infrastructure level office
• Identify and solve 1st and 2nd line Application, Desktop and Infrastructure problems
• Be involved in technical and business application projects
• Ensure documentation is maintained and accurate
• Opportunity to be involved in business application development projects

The right candidate will have strong Desktop experience, some Server experience, and a desire to develop their skills into other application-related areas.

The Candidate
We are looking for a self motivated and enthusiastic Systems Engineer with excellent communications skills, both verbal and written to provide a proactive support service to the Firm.  You will be a team player, displaying initiative and empathy towards others.  You will need to exhibit excellent problem solving skills and attention to detail.

Previous experience in a Legal or Financial Services background together with a full UK driver licence would be advantageous but is not essential as travel to other offices will be required.

Technical Skills/Experience

Ideally you will possess some or all of the following experience and knowledge:

• Experience of working on a 1st or 2nd line Helpdesk
• Application support experience and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. Legal application support knowledge is desirable but not essential.  
• Desktop Support (Windows 7 to 10)
• Desktop Builds (Windows 7 to 10)
• Microsoft Patching, including WSUS
• Remote Desktop Support (Windows RDS, Citrix etc)
• Telephone System Support
• Audio/Visual Support (videoconferencing, LCD projector, etc.)
• Server Administration (Windows Server 2008 to 2016) is desirable but is not essential
• Active Directory Administration
• Infrastructure Support (at least 1st line skill level)
• Development skills or knowledge would be an advantage


This is a full time role consisting of 37.5 hours per week. The candidate would be expected to work a shift between 08.00 and 17.30.

We have a vacancy for a full-time Team Assistant to join our busy and well respected Wills, Trust and Probate team in our Chelmsford office.

The Department
You will join the specialised Wills, Trust and Probate team which provides a wide range of services to guide individuals to make decisions regarding their personal and financial affairs to enable them to plan ahead.   The team also assists families following a bereavement.

Specialist advice includes:

• Wills – why you should make one;
• Trust – what a trust is and the suitability for you;
• Inheritance Tax planning;
• Probate;
• Planning future care – individual and family;
• Powers of Attorney

The Candidate
We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic applicant to join the team to help to deliver a secretarial support service to our Fee Earning team by assisting with typing, client liaison, Will signing, Wills and Probate form completion and general administration duties.

Evidence of previous secretarial experience and ability to demonstrate a proactive approach is essential. 

The candidate will need to exhibit excellent communication skills, attention to detail along with client care skills. They will also be required to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Organisational Support
• Awareness of Fee Earners’ workloads to plan ahead, with minimal supervision
• Organising daily routine to ensure that correspondence, documents and instructions dictated or given by your Fee Earners are completed accurately and on time.
• Dealing with post, internal and external, distributing and action as instructed.
• Maintains a professional attitude and effective communications between Clients, Fee Earners and the team.
• Process relevant documents, upon instruction, with complete accuracy and on time.
• Researches and conducts basic research (online or otherwise) for Fee Earner when required.

Client Relationship and Business Development
• Providing a first-rate service to clients, both internal and external, presenting a positive image of the Birkett Long at all times.
• Has a sense of professionalism and maintains effective communications with clients and Fee Earners, taking appropriate and detailed information from enquiries and ensuring any messages are passed on instantly to the relevant persons.

Document Production
• Creates typed work of a high quality, formatting in accordance with house style, aware of the layout of documents, forms and letters and produces these with accuracy and at a high speed.
• Makes effective use of the case management system.
• Proof reads all documents for spelling, grammar and sense, querying wording where appropriate.
• Adopts a proactive approach and works with Fee Earners effectively, to maintain regular file management. Ensures files are kept tidy, accurate and up to date then closed and archived as appropriate

The ideal candidate will have;

• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise
• Strong attention to detail
• The ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own

The Team
You will join the fast-paced South Essex Dispute Resolution Team which advises on all types of professional and commercial disputes as well as private client matters, providing practical advice to companies and individuals on the best way forward when trying to resolve disputes with shareholders, partners, directors, other companies (including insurers) and individuals (eg. neighbours and other land owners). 

The Role
We have a vacancy for a full-time Trainee Litigation Assistant to join our busy and well respected South Essex Dispute Resolution Team in our Chelmsford office.

The role will predominantly involve supporting an experienced Associate with a varied caseload of Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence files and will entail:

• Assisting with diary, file and case management including opening and organising files, planning and scheduling meetings and conferences, recording and monitoring directions timetables and court dates.
• Obtaining, checking and collating medical records.
• Organising and collating documents for disclosure and preparing Lists of Documents.
• Organising and collating receipts and expenses and preparing Schedules of Special Damages.
• Assisting and collating documentation to accompany instructions to experts and counsel.
• Liaising with clients and medical experts in order to schedule appointments and follow up the receipt of expert reports.
• Liaising with clients generally to keep them informed of progress in their case.

• Assisting with the team’s marketing initiatives.

Some marketing and business development will also be expected of the successful candidate.


The Candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join our highly regarded team of specialist lawyers.

Some previous experience within a similar role would be advantageous but is not essential as training will be provided.  There will also be the possibility of developing knowledge and skills though external training and development via an Apprenticeship Paralegal qualification

BLIFA Trainee Paraplanner

We have a vacancy for a Trainee Paraplanner for our well established IFA company.  The position is full time and is based in our Colchester Office.  However, the successful candidate will also provide cover for our other offices in Chelmsford and Basildon and will be required to travel to those offices.

The Role

• Database creation and management
• Preparing necessary paperwork and application forms for client meetings
• Obtaining Illustrations and quotations from Platform providers and Insurance companies, etc
• Communicating with product providers on case progress
• Liaising with other Financial Services Team members and departments in the firm in relation to mutual clients
• General secretarial/admin support
• Dealing with telephone calls from clients and product providers

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have;

• IT proficient and to be self supporting
