Extension of IR35 postponed
- AuthorJulie Temple
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury announced on 17 March 2020 that the extension of the off-payroll working rules and IR35 will be postponed to 6 April 2021.
Broadly, IR35 was introduced to ensure that those who worked like employees paid broadly the same tax and national insurance contributions. Off-payroll working rules were introduced in the public sector and were due to be extended to the private sector. Under the extension responsibility for assessing the tax status of workers was shifting from the intermediary company to the end user.
This will be welcome news to many given the many uncertainties that there have been and will continue to be.
