Charities to benefit from Birkett Long's Free Wills Month
During October 2012, more than £50,000 has been bequeathed to charity by people taking advantage of a free will writing service from Essex law firm Birkett Long.
Birkett Long supported Free Wills Month which enabled people aged 55 and over to have a will written or updated at no cost. The campaign was led by charities including the Salvation Army, Arthritis Research UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, in the hope that members of the public would make donations to these good causes in their wills.
Ben Parmenter from Birkett Long’s Wills, Trusts and Probate Team said: “We were delighted to take part in Free Wills Month. We had an excellent take up with 49 people making an appointment with us.
“Although under no obligation, many people decided to leave a contribution to their chosen charity in their wills. This is great news as most UK charities depend on legacies for up to half their income.”
He added: “As an organisation, Birkett Long is committed to helping charities wherever we can. We will also be supporting the next Free Wills Month which will take place in March.”
Other charities involved in the campaign include Blue Cross, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Stroke Association, RNLI Lifeboats, WWF, British Heart Foundation and Parkinson’s UK.
