Lawyers raise funds for St Helena Hospice
Community-spirited lawyers have helped raise £2,220 to support St Helena Hospice by writing wills.
The team of ten lawyers from Birkett Long’s Colchester-based Wills, Trusts and Probate team gave their services for free to the Hospice’s Wills Month.
The legal team made around 30 wills, waiving their usual fees in return for a donation of £90 to the charity for a single will, or £150 for a couple’s will.
Helen Scatola from St Helena Hospice, said: “We thank Birkett Long for their generous support of our Wills Month campaign. St Helena Hospice relies on our community to raise over £6 million a year to care for and support patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families, and we couldn’t do this without the continued support of businesses like Birkett Long.”
Birkett Long Partner Liz Jones, from the Wills, Trusts and Probate team, who presented the cheque to St Helena Hospice on 16 October, said: “As well as raising money for a vital local charity, Wills Month helps to raise awareness of the importance of making a will.
“Everybody should have a will, and we particularly want to encourage young families to make a will. If you don’t, then your wishes may not be followed – your property, money and personal possessions will be distributed according to the law, and you may have a long-term partner, friends or relatives who are left out. If you have young children, it is really important for you to set out your wishes for them.”
