A woman who was injured in a fall at the hotel where she was staying on holiday has won £3,000 in damages.

The woman and her husband were on a package holiday provided by a major tour operator. She was walking through the hotel bar when she slipped on a wet patch on the floor and hurt her wrist. Although the wrist was not broken, as was first thought, the injury ruined the rest of her holiday.

It emerged that the floor was wet because of a leak in the roof. There was a bucket to catch the drips, but this had overflowed, causing a puddle of water. The bucket was hidden from view by a pillar and there were no signs warning of the potential danger.

The woman had suffered soft tissue damage and continued to experience pain in her wrist for two to three months after the accident.

She decided to bring a personal injury claim against the tour operator because it had failed to provide a safe holiday environment. The company admitted liability but claimed that the woman had contributed to the accident.

After court proceedings were initiated, the tour operator agreed to pay £3,000 in damages. This was to compensate the woman for her injury and the loss of enjoyment of part of her holiday, and also to cover the cost of the damage to a pair of glasses she was wearing at the time of the accident.
