Legal Directories: Birkett Long strengthens its presence in Essex

Essex law firm Birkett Long has consolidated its position in the county over the past year with the launch of a Basildon branch in October. This gave Birkett Long its third base in the county, joining its established offices in Chelmsford and Colchester.  By June, the firm had acquired Wickford firm Brian Ruff, Angus and Jewers which meant that the new Basildon office expanded to more than twice its size in the first nine months.

Birkett Long, which has been ranked in this year’s Legal 500 directory in 14 different sections and in Chambers & Partners in 9 areas, has worked for a plethora of top name clients and on many large scale projects over the past year.

One such project was the opening of the UK’s largest restaurant in Bristol in December. Commercial property expert David Rayner used his wide expertise of the retail and leisure sectors to help open Za Za Bazaar on time, just eight months after the initial instruction, despite lease complications and licensing objections.

Meanwhile, construction specialist Peter Allen provided contractual advice on the build of the 250m titanium Stratford Shoal by Sorba (UK) Ltd at a key time in East London’s history. He was also integral in securing a €7m contract for air solutions supplier Fläkt Woods UK to supply ventilation fans for the Marmaray rail tunnel project in Turkey.

Tracey Dickens and David Wisbey from the corporate and commercial team acted on the buyout of a major shareholder of MDS Civil Engineering.  David also helped to complete a £14.7 million contract for the sale of part of global electronics firm e2v technologies.

In addition, he advised freight forwarding specialist Fallow International Freight Limited on the sale of a strategic stake in the business to CWT Globelink Pte Limited, the freight logistics arm of Singapore listed CWT Limited.

Elsewhere in the firm, the education team advised on the conversion of Hilltop Junior School in Wickford to academy status.  Some of the firm’s notable clients include DP World London Gateway, the University of Essex, East of England Co-operative Society, Braintree District Council, Lloyds TSB, Maricksons Ltd, Wilkin & Sons Ltd and Alliance Medical.

Birkett Long, which has roots dating back to 1821, is one of the region’s largest full service law firms.  As well as its ranking in the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners, the firm has also achieved silver status for the Investors in People award, putting it in the top one per cent of organisations in the UK recognised by the body.

Managing Partner Adrian Livesley said: “This has been an extremely productive year in our history. Our expansion plans have continued at a pace and we remain firmly committed to developing our presence across the whole of the county over the next year and beyond. We aim to provide our clients with an even better, more streamlined service in the future, to ensure that we are again listed in the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners directories.”
