£3,500 for Shopper Caught in Automatic Door

A man has won £3,500 in compensation after he was caught in the sliding doors at a supermarket.

The man was entering the store when the automatic doors closed unexpectedly. He tried to get out of the way but became trapped in the doors. He experienced considerable distress before staff were eventually able to free him.

Unfortunately, the man had a pre-existing spinal injury. By the time he was able to leave the supermarket, he was suffering from intense back pain. Following the accident, he had to take a higher dose of painkillers in order to remain mobile.

The man brought a claim for compensation against the supermarket on the ground that it had failed in its duty to ensure that its premises were safe for customers. The automatic doors should have been switched off, as they were clearly faulty. A private medical examination established that the accident had worsened the man’s spinal condition.

The supermarket eventually agreed to pay compensation of £3,500 for the man’s injuries and the distress he had suffered as a result of the accident.
