New solicitor joins the family team

Birkett Long is delighted to welcome solicitor, Lucy Birch, to its divorce and family team.

Lucy’s role involves advising on all aspects of private family law, including divorce and separation, children matters, injunctive proceedings and cohabitation disputes. Lucy will be based in the firm’s Colchester office.

Before qualifying as a solicitor in October 2016, Lucy worked as a paralegal focusing on family law and, prior to joining Birkett Long, worked at a firm in Brentwood, a fellow tier 1 legal 500 firm for family law in Essex.

Lucy has always been interested in family law. She did her LLB at Essex University, followed by her Legal Practice Course at the University of Law, obtaining a distinction. She chose both children and the law and family law as elective subjects and she was awarded the Elizabeth Ann Gumble prize in her second year for attaining the highest mark in the year group. It became clear to her at this stage that this was the area of the law that she wanted to work in.

Lucy sits on the Essex Resolution Committee, a network of family lawyers with under 10 years’ post qualification experience. Her role on the committee involves helping to organise talks, seminars and social events for local lawyers.

Lucy really enjoys the variety of the work at Birkett Long, meeting different types of clients and the fact that no day is ever the same.

Lucy says: “I work in a great team. I carried out work experience at Birkett Long’s Chelmsford office in my second year at University and how nice the people were has really stuck with me, perhaps influencing my decision to apply for a position at Birkett Long.”
