Law firm sponsors future cycle stars
Cycling stars of the future are being helped on the road to success by sponsorship from Essex law firm Birkett Long.
The firm, which has offices in Colchester, Chelmsford and Basildon, has sponsored Essex-based Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club’s high-flying Junior team.
With cycling enjoying a huge surge in popularity since Team GB’s success at the London and Rio Olympics, the club gives talented Essex youngsters the chance to compete in national youth competitions in road racing, time trialling, mountain biking, cyclocross, and track racing. Club riders also compete on the continent, including the European Junior Cycling Tour of Assen in Holland.
The Junior team, which caters for under-18s, has members from across the county and, in its second season, is already enjoying success in National Series races.
Birkett Long Partner and Head of Commercial Department, Peter Allen said: “All the team members are very committed, training or racing six or seven times a week and covering hundreds of miles. They have to fit it around their sixth-form work.
“Their aim is to be selected for the National Series road races, which involve travelling across the country and to events in Scotland and Wales. Our sponsorship helps the team to pay for race entry fees, overnight accommodation and travel costs.”
Club Secretary Bob Griffiths said: “The Junior team has grown from three to seven riders this year. We’re grateful for Birkett Long’s sponsorship which has allowed us to expand the team and compete in more top class events.
“Last month we took the team to our first European race in Vlamertinge, Belgium, where our riders took fourth and fifth place out of a field of around 70.”
Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club caters for around 200 riders aged 6-18 years, running activities ranging from serious training for champions through to riding for fun.
