A contract worth €7m was secured by Colchester air solutions supplier Fläkt Woods UK with the help of specialist legal advice from Birkett Long.

Peter Allen, Birkett Long partner and construction law expert, advised the Axial Way based company on terms and conditions for the contract, to supply ventilation fans for the Marmaray rail tunnel project in Turkey.

Case Summary

The 76km, high capacity metrostyle railway will connect Europe and Asia by crossing the Istanbul Strait. He said: “Fläkt Woods is supplying large axial fans and jet fans for eight shafts to ventilate the new crossing. Measuring up to 2.8 metres in diameter, the fans will be capable of providing emergency ventilation in the worst case scenario – a fire on a freight train more than a kilometre long.” He added: “It is always exciting to be involved in such a prestigious project and it is very satisfying to see a successful manufacturing business in Colchester exporting around the world. The negotiating of this contract became quite hectic as the deadline approached, but we made it and the systems are now well on their way to being completed.
