1 down 23 to go...

I felt both excited and perhaps understandably, slightly nervous on the morning of my first day as a trainee solicitor. Happily, I can report that my nerves quickly subsided; I was made to feel very welcome from the moment I arrived. What was striking from the outset was the friendly and supportive atmosphere; every member of the firm from support staff to partners made me feel at ease. My first seat is in the South Essex Dispute Resolution team in the firm’s Chelmsford office.
After one month working in the team at the time of writing, it would be fair to say I have learnt a lot already! I have been entrusted with responsibility from day one. I am already running client files under the supervision of two partners, have attended numerous client meetings, represented a client in court and drafted various legal documentation and correspondence. I have gained experience in a variety of different areas of litigation, from construction to medical negligence. It is safe to say that each day brings a new challenge; but this is by far one of the best parts of the job!
The solicitors in the department are extremely busy, but I cannot point to one occasion where they have not taken the time to answer any questions I may have. They also encourage me to give my opinion and views on legal issues that arise during a case. This not only makes me feel like a valued member of the team, but also keeps me on my toes (which I really enjoy).
I have had a fantastic first month at Birkett Long and I feel very lucky to be undertaking my training contract with the firm. I look forward to updating you on my training as time passes.
