On Saturday the Birkett Long football team conquered all (except the mighty Tesco) to finish runners up in the Papworth Trust Football Tournament. In a format that departed from convention the first 3 games were friendlies, and with 3 wins and 2 clean sheets confidence was high (despite some suspect penalty taking).
The planned knockout stage morphed into 2 groups of 4, and that stage was negotiated with a win (against De Rouge), loss (to Tesco) and walk over (against Holiday Inn Basildon). At that point the prediction of thunder, lightning and rain came to pass, albeit only briefly.
The die hard fans that stuck around for the spectacle of the semi-finals were first rewarded with a 0-0 draw, and thankfully it was straight to penalties. The lessons of sunnier times were learnt and the team progressed 4-3, the opposition ruing the lack of ABBA having missed out on taking the first kick.
After the other semi-final, third place play off and seemingly endless penalty shootout it was on to the final. Despite having lost to Tesco in the group stage there was hope that with fresh legs and a longer game the final would be different. Sadly it wasn’t to be and before the team could even squabble over it the silver medal had been pocketed by the Captain.
