Birkett Long v Ensors
- AuthorDavid Feakins
Last Thursday, some of Birkett Long’s finest football players were involved in a 5-a-side friendly against Ensors in Ipswich.
Organised by our colleague Tom, we piled into his car after work and headed to the game for what was supposed to be a 6.30pm start. After a few diversions to beat the traffic, we arrived 5 minutes before kick off. Unfortunately, it was at this point Tom informed Dave Feakins that we were playing in a school hall and not on a 3G pitch. With only football boots with him, we wondered if Dave would have to play in his work shoes. After a few ideas were thrown about, Simon Green “offered” (i.e. was told) to play bare foot in goal so that Dave could wear his trainers out on pitch. Although comfortable running trainers, they weren’t the easiest to play football in!
With absolutely no subs on the bench and in a sweltering hall, Birkett Long run out as 7-5 winners on the night. Our goals came from Tom and his brother, Joe, whilst Dave and Tim Field sat back and defended. A few decent saves from Simon helped us along the way, although on another night we could have been down to 4 men after Tom made a horror tackle on Ensors’ best player when through on goal. Luckily for him, there was no referee to show him the red card! However, this was all taken in good spirits, partly because Joe had hit the ground about 4 or 5 times beforehand (although some of these looked like dives Tom Daley would be pleased with).
As is the norm, we visited the local pub after the game for a few well deserved drinks with the guys at Ensors. A rematch to be played at Colchester was suggested, so round 2 looks as though it is on the cards.
