Ensure you are protected

I was watching the news at lunch time and there was an item on a care home being investigated for neglect of its residents. It really was quite distressing, and it got me thinking about ways in which those who are vulnerable can be protected.

Most people are aware that they can appoint someone to deal with their finances by preparing a Financial Lasting Power of Attorney.  However, fewer people are aware that a Lasting Power of Attorney can also be prepared to cover health care issues, such as medical treatment, and welfare issues, such as where you live.  This is called a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare. If one is prepared, this can be invaluable to family or friends as it really empowers them to make and query medical decisions, if you are not able to do so yourself.  For example, in this news item, the resident’s medication was changed without any consultation with the family. Had a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare been prepared, the family could have been advised and consulted.

Both types of Lasting Powers of Attorney are really vital and can ensure that you are protected if the worst should happen.  If you would like more information on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me at our Chelmsford office on 01245 453835 or email me claire.read@birkettlong.co.uk
