New charity added to Run4fun beneficiaries
- AuthorJennie Skingsley
For the last nine year’s Run4Fun has benefitted the Mayor of Colchester’s charities (having raised over £66,550 for them). This year we have taken the decision to not only support the Mayor’s charities (which will be announced in May) but also Birkett Long’s charity for the year.
From June 2011 the firm will be raising money for Christopher John Holmes’ Grassroots Fund, which is administered by the Essex Community Foundation. This fund will also benefit from a portion of the money raised by Run4Fun 2011.
More about Chris Holmes and his fund
Chris Holmes was an extraordinary man; highly respected within his profession as an exceptional lawyer having worked as a solicitor for Birkett Long for 48 years, latterly holding the position of Senior Partner.
Chris was also admired for his tireless work supporting local charities, always willing to be involved in his local community. He was the driving force behind building Colchester’s St Helena Hospice for which he received an OBE and establishing Essex Macmillan Cancer Support. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of Essex, a member of the Court of University of Essex and in 2001 he joined Essex Community Foundation (ECF) as a Trustee. He was also Chairman of the Earls Colne Good Companions Group in his home village, a position which he held from the age of 32!
Chris died in March 2010 following a brain tumour, which became apparent almost immediately after his retirement from Birkett Long in 2007. Chris cared about people from all backgrounds and wanted to help them in any way that he could. The Christopher Holmes Charitable Fund, established by Chris prior to his death, will go on supporting charities and voluntary organisations in Essex in his memory, forever.
“The whole basis of my life is I love people from all walks of life – and I inherited that from my parents. They were both community-minded. So, I hope, am I.” Chris Holmes
