Angelina Jolie to divorce Brad Pitt
Unless you have missed the news this week you will have heard that Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt citing ‘irreconcilable differences’. The couple married in 2014 and have six children together. It is reported that Jolie is seeking full custody of their children with visitation rights for Pitt and that they have a fortune of around £300million between them to share out!
Divorce and relationship breakdown is always a difficult time for all parties involved, especially the children, so it was good to hear Brad Pitt saying that ‘what matters most now is the well-being of our kids’. It is important that the needs and best interests of the children are put first.
In the UK (unlike the US where Brad and Angelina are getting divorced as the law is different), when assessing how to divide the matrimonial assets on divorce the Court will look at a number of factors. They include issues such as the income, earning capacity, property and other financial resources of the parties and their financial needs, obligations and responsibilities for the future. They will also look at the duration of the marriage, age of the parties, standard of living and contributions that the parties have made to the marriage.
