200 years celebrations - May
- AuthorJennie Skingsley
We are continuing our 200-year anniversary celebrations with random acts of kindness in the local community and a look back at our history.
Random acts of kindness
This month we visited our friends at Writtle University College Equine Academy. We have worked with the academy for many years and wanted to thank the students for being such remarkable brand ambassadors whilst wearing their kits sponsored by Birkett Long.
Sarah Humphryes from our Marketing team surprised the students with some bespoke sweet packages, and we didn’t forget the horses who had some horse treats.
We were delighted to enjoy a socially distanced tour of the academy and were privileged to meet some of the students and their horses.
Sarah Humphryes said: “The level of professionalism exhibited by all of the staff and students at the academy is apparent and we are honoured to have them representing us whilst competing and on site. It was a pleasure to meet them and their horses.”
Jane Hart, Lecturer in Equine Performance from Writtle University College Equine Academy said: “Through their continued sponsorship support to the Writtle University College Equine Academy, Birkett Long has not only promoted professionalism and personal development on a long term basis, but this week, has also made the end of the semester a less stressful time through a random act of kindness by bringing locally resourced sweets and treats to the riders and horses.”
Essex Search and Rescue, a charity which assists the police searching for vulnerable missing people such as young children and those with dementia received boxes of jelly beans as a thank you to all of their hardworking staff and volunteers.
We aren’t the only ones celebrating an anniversary this year. This year the charity Childline (which merged with the NSPCC in 2006) is celebrating their 35th anniversary and in their 35th year they are looking for 35 companies to raise money for Childline. Birkett Long made a donation to enable them to answer 16 calls from children facing problems or danger. Childline is there to give young people a voice when no-one else is listening and provides a place for them to turn to for support any time of the day or night.
Sarah Laffling from the NSPCC said: “Thank you so much for making our first donation to our Childline campaign. It is really great to have Birkett Long’s support. Congratulations on celebrating 200 years!”
Our HR team sent a box of chocolate bars to a recruitment agency they work closely with. Origin Legal said: “Love this idea of spreading kindness. Thank you from everyone at Origin Legal”.
Our Dispute Resolution team sent some Birkett Long 200 year branded cupcakes to LB Insolvency Solutions who they work closely with.
Birkett Long’s Administration team surprised their Royal Mail postie with a bright bunch of flowers to thank her.
Philip Hoddell from our Divorce and Family team sent boxes of cookies to the staffroom at Colchester Royal Grammar School, where he is a Governor. The happy recipients said: “With perfect timing after a long week, our friends at Birkett Long have delivered two boxes of Millie’s Cookies to the staffroom. Thank you and happy 200th birthday”.
From our history
Did you know that in 1994 Philip Hoddell, Head of our Divorce and Family team became a Partner at Birkett Long? Philip has been with the firm for a remarkable 34 years after qualifying as a solicitor in 1989. He has seen many changes to the law firm over the years including the rebranding from Smith, Morton & Long to Birkett Long in 1995 and, more recently, significant growth and modernisation.
A Governor at Colchester Royal Grammar School, former Chairman of Colchester Round Table, former President of Suffolk and North Essex Law Society and an RFU-accredited former coach at Colchester Rugby Club, Philip enjoys being at the heart of, and giving back to, the local community.
Although not as old as Philip, the Birkett Long Twitter account is also celebrating being in existence for 10 years this year. We have looked back with nostalgia at our first ever tweet!!
Kind messages of congratulations
We have had many kind messages of congratulations but this month would like to share this one from LB Insolvency Solutions.
"The cakes were a lovely gift – thank you.
They were truly scrumptious and didn’t last that long amongst the LBIS gannets 😊
Seriously, on behalf of LBIS we wish all those at Birkett Long a happy 200th anniversary!!"
