A year to remember

Here is a short video that tells the story of our 200 year anniversary campaign by some of those involved.
It shows us what it meant to both the givers and the receivers of random acts of kindness.

Sweet treats for both horse and rider
Having been a long term supporter of Writtle University College Equine Academy, we thought it right that we include them in our celebrations. So we delivered locally sourced sweet treats to both riders and horses. Here’s what they had to say
“It was a pleasure to meet you on Tuesday and thank you so much for finding the time to visit and have a quick tour of the facilities. Visits by you and the other representatives of Birkett Long are really motivating for the students as it highlights the importance of industry networks and is a reminder that they are ambassadors for both Writtle and Birkett Long. We are so delighted to be part of your 200 years milestone”
“Through their continued sponsorship support to the Writtle University College Equine Academy, Birkett Long has not only promoted professionalism and personal development on a long term basis, but this week, has also made the end of the semester a less stressful time through a random act of kindness by bringing locally sourced sweets and treats to the riders and horses.”

Help keeping the calm to carry on
The pandemic was particularly hard on those working in the care sector, none more so than Farleigh Hospice. The NHS was rightly applauded by everyone during the pandemic, however, Farleigh were overlooked in this respect so we wanted to right that wrong. We wanted to recognise their amazing efforts so delivered 400 calm kits for their staff.
“I am delighted to hear from you and this is indeed very welcome news. I know these gifts of kindness will be much appreciated by our staff who are feeling fatigued not just because of Covid but due to ongoing increasing demands on our services and in turn on the teams who work hard to bring in income to support the clinical services.”
Also, Alison mentioned that this is the first gift they have had for about 18 months; they are grateful that we thought of them. Apparently, the NHS got so much chocolate they didn’t know what to do with it, but Farleigh didn’t get anything.

Many tools make a beautiful garden
Headway Essex is a charity that supports those suffering a brain injury. In Essex, every 58 minutes, somebody is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury. As a charity, their mission is to ensure that everyone in Essex living with an acquired brain injury can live a fulfilling life and that families and carers are better able to cope within their caring roles.
We made a donation to Headway Essex that was used towards renovating the garden used by their service users and carers.
Tracey Wellstead, Fundraising Manager for Headway Essex said: “Thank you so much for your donation, we’re over the moon with how our service users are embracing the garden.”

Remembering Charlotte
Since the loss of our much-loved colleague, Charlotte Adams, in 2014, we have continued to support her mother, Kate Bome in her fundraising for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). Kate has worked tirelessly for this charity in Charlotte’s name, raising enough to fund 3 community defibrillators and countless screening sessions. We sent Kate some flowers as a small token to thank her for her work.
Also, Charlotte's anniversary is on 23 November. To celebrate this we presented cupcakes, made by our colleague Leanne Steele, to the children's nursery where she worked before coming to Birkett Long.

Just a rainbow in someone’s cloud
In our first random act of kindness, all St Helena Hospice staff received ‘calm kits’ containing The Happy Newspaper, chocolate, tissues, calm tea, sweets and mints which put a smile on the faces of this hardworking team. St Helena Hospice supports local families facing incurable illness and bereavement.
Sarah Wilson, Fundraising Manager at St Helena Hospice said: “On behalf of everyone here at St Helena Hospice I want to say a big thank you to Birkett Long for thinking of us at what has been a challenging time for everyone. We all really appreciate the calm kits, an act of kindness goes a long way and means so much.”  On behalf of us all at St Helena Hospice I would like to say a massive thank you for your special 'Random Act of Kindness' gift for us all.
We are very touched by this thoughtful and thought-provoking gift, reminding us to practice self-care and enhance our wellbeing. We are proud to share your 200th anniversary and your on-going support for St Helena Hospice. I am reminded of a quote by Maya Angelou "“Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud”, which is very apt as the rainbow image has been significant during the pandemic. Thank you for being a rainbow to our organisation,

Just so you know we’re thinking of you
Joann Kebbell from our HR team was sent some flowers to thank her for phoning staff regularly to make sure they were ok working from home during the national lockdowns. We felt that this selfless act of compassion needed to be recognised.
Joann said “I wanted to say a massive thank you.  I am honestly really very touched and grateful, and it means so much more that colleagues have thought of me in this way.”
A big thank you to everyone involved in this wonderful
year to remember
