An annual survey published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (“HEFCE”) has shown a 24% increase in income from intellectual property in one year.
This is HEFCE’s ninth survey recording business and community interaction with higher education institutions in the United Kingdom, and the results for 2008-2009 have shown another increase on the previous academic year in technology-transfer activities like collaborative research and development and IP licensing (software and non-software).
The increase in income from IP of 24%, from £45 million in 2007-2008 to £56 million in 2008-2009, does not include income received from the sale of shares in spin-offs, which increased by 188% in that same period.
Despite GDP falling by 2%, a very encouraging increase was shown in the overall exchange of knowledge between higher education institutions and the public, private and third sectors of about 5.5%, from £2,812 million in 2007-2008 to £2,966 million in 2008-2009.
