The Office of Fair Trading has produced new guidance to help retailers and anyone who sells goods to consumers to comply with the Sale of Goods Act 1979 when customers want to return goods or ask for a refund.
In developing this section of their website, the Office of Fair Trading consulted the British Retail Consortium as part of an attempt to improve customer services whilst helping retailers to understand what their obligations really are.
This is welcome guidance for those in the sector, but the Sale of Goods Act 1979 is just one small part of the consumer rights laws and regulations which retailers must comply with. Detailed guidance should always be sought to ensure that such situations are dealt with correctly and where possible terms and conditions should be used and then reviewed to make sure that they are in line with the latest guidance.
