England football star faces speeding charges

Jermain Defoe, the Tottenham Hotspur and England striker, faces sentencing at a magistrates' court later this month after being convicted of speeding.

The 26-year-old was caught breaking a 50mph speed limit on two occasions last year on the M11 at Chigwell, Essex, Chelmsford Magistrates' Court heard.

Defoe, who already has six points on his driver's licence for previous offences, must attend court for sentencing on 26 June, district judge Mark Jabbitt said.

Last week Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse was fined £750 and handed six penalty points by South Tyneside Magistrates' Court after driving at 81mph in a 40mph zone, close to the football club's training ground.

Four in ten motorists think more speed limit signs should be placed on Britain's roads, according to research published last week by Direct Line and Brake, the road safety charity.

The study also found that two-thirds of motorists cannot recognise a zebra crossing sign.
