Partner Under Arrest!
It’s not every day that a partner from a law firm is handcuffed and driven away in a riot van, but perhaps that’s why Colchester’s Town Crier came out to announce the news! The stunt was, in actual fact, not a real arrest but a fund raiser for Brain Tumour UK. On Wednesday 17 December several of the town’s business people were rounded up by the local police, arrested on trumped up charges, and taken to Colchester Town Hall where they were held until at least £250 in bail money could be raised for each ‘prisoner’.
Partner, Philip Hoddell, from Birkett Long LLP, was arrested for the heinous crime of “impersonating a solicitor”. The police arrived to make the arrest whilst Mr Hoddell was in his office carrying out normal duties on Wednesday morning. The town crier summoned up his mightiest voice to announce the fact that a crime had been committed to astonished staff in Birkett Long’s offices and passers-by on the street outside.
The arrest had been a closely guarded secret at the firm, with only Philip’s immediate colleagues being informed of the under cover operation.
Whilst in custody at the Town Hall, Mr Hoddell had his photograph and finger prints taken, and had to undergo the further humiliation of facing a gang of press photographers before he was released on bail. His participation in this event will benefit the charity, Brain Tumour UK, by more than £660.
