Winning Reviews for Mock Employment Tribunal

Essex law firm, Birkett Long Solicitors, recently held a ‘Mock Employment Tribunal’ in association with Park City Consulting Limited. The mock tribunal and seminar demonstrated to delegates what happens at an employment tribunal, how they can prepare for it to maximise their chances of success and tips on best practice in employment that can help avoid going to tribunal in the first place.

The combination of human resource knowledge from Park City and legal expertise from the employment law team at Birkett Long, gave delegates access to a wealth of information from people who specialise in employment related matters and attend employment tribunals frequently in the course of their work. Questions were taken at the end of the seminar, which was attended by more than 80 people, most of whom have responsibility for employment procedures within their own organisations.

The teams from Birkett Long and Park City acted out a tribunal hearing so that delegates could see exactly what happens in terms of procedure and practice. As Birkett Long employment partner, Tim Ogle, explains: “Many people find that the first time they attend a tribunal hearing it is a daunting and nerve wracking experience because they have no idea what takes place from the start of the proceedings to the finish. Role playing a tribunal hearing allowed us to show delegates what happens and exactly what is expected of them. Hopefully we have shown everyone here that a tribunal isn’t quite so daunting if you are well prepared.”

Juliet Price of Park City said: "Park City's role is to work with clients to reduce the risk of tribunal claims; understanding what happens at tribunal only goes to reinforce the requirement for robust policies and procedures and the management ability to understand and follow them. In the last year there has been a 23% increase in tribunal claims and the average cost of such claims has risen to £18,500."

The mock employment tribunal was so successful that Birkett Long and Park City plan to host a similar event in the future in response to the requests they have received from those who were unable to attend on this occasion.
