Alan's Definitely on the Ball!
Head of Birkett Long Solicitors’ financial services department, Alan Goggin, has been awarded a ‘Value the Volunteer’ certificate from the Rugby Football Union, as formal recognition of the contribution he has made to the game.
Alan has played rugby since the tender age of 10, and celebrated his 60th birthday by playing for Brightlingsea’s 2nd XV alongside his sons, Ben and Luke. President of the Brightlingsea Rugby Club, Alan’s life has been marked by sporting achievements, the most notable of which weren’t in rugby at all. He held the title of British senior champion waterskier a record 12 times, represented the country at 2 world championships and 7 European championships, and was team manager and chairman of the British Water Ski Federation. Today, Alan is the British representative on the European governing body of the sport.
But life isn’t all fun and games for Alan. He also had the dubious pleasure of eating 78 oysters at Colchester’s famous oyster feast in 2007. Alan is Mayor of Brightlingsea and has a full time ‘day job’ leading the busy financial services team at Birkett Long Solicitors, one of the largest law firms in Essex, where he advises clients on investments, mortgages and pensions, and has been responsible for hosting extremely successful seminars with the well known financial commentator and TV personality, Justin Urquhart Stewart.
People often ask Alan how he manages to find enough time to dedicate to his diverse interests. “My life is undoubtedly busy”, remarks Alan, “but I’m fortunate in being able to take part in the things I love, both through my involvement in sport and in my career. When you’re doing something you enjoy, you somehow find time to fit it all in!”
The RFU’s Value the Volunteer programme formally recognises the contribution of outstanding individuals who serve the game. Anyone can be nominated and they are a personal thank you to rugby’s biggest supporters.
