Runners Make Nearly £9,000 for Charity

Birkett Long has just announced the total from its annual Run4Fun, which took place in Colchester’s Castle Park during September.

A cheque for £8,850 was handed to the Mayor of Colchester on 7 November at the Town Hall. The money will be divided between the Mayor’s chosen charities, which are: Army Benevolent Fund, Colchester YMCA, RELATE, Home-Start Colchester, 7th Colchester (St Johns) Scout Group, and the 44th Colchester West Scout Group.

The cheque was handed over during the Mayor’s annual quiz night. Prizes have also been given to Amanda Smith from Royal Bank of Scotland who raised £245 – the most sponsorship from an individual, and Larking Gowen who won the award for the most sponsorship raised by an organisation with their total of £382.50.

The 2.5 mile run has become an annual event for Birkett Long, which since its inception in 2001 has raised almost £48,000 for charity. This year’s total of £8,850 tops the £7,420 raised in 2006. Jennie Skingsley, Birkett Long’s Run4Fun organiser, said: “People give the Run4Fun tremendous support and put a lot of effort into making it a fun event. This year we had 572 runners taking part and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed by sponsorship, running, donating prizes, helping with the organisation or simply by being there. It’s very rewarding to see exactly how much money has been raised over the years. Bring on 2008!”
