Liz Jones, solicitor at Essex law firm, Birkett Long, has become a Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Courts Civil); a top achievement that enables her to appear in any civil court up to the House of Lords.
Ms Jones is an expert in child care law and frequently appears before the courts representing clients. The status of Solicitor-Advocate is awarded to a small number of solicitors only and required Ms Jones to put together a portfolio of her work in court over the last two years, as well as face questions on procedure. The status is never automatically granted – the solicitor has to apply to the Solicitors Regulation Authority which examines the amount and quality of advocacy work that the applicant has undertaken in the civil courts, in order to reach their decision.
Something of a linguist, Ms Jones has worked in Germany and France, and has a diploma in French law. She trained at the city firm of Allen & Overy after studying at universities in Leicester and Strasbourg. Ms Jones is a member of the Law Society Children Panel and finds time to work as a volunteer at St Helena Hospice, a cause that has been supported by Birkett Long for many years.
Ms Jones becomes a member of the respected Solicitors’ Association of Higher Court Advocates (SAHCA), a body that acts as a public information source, and offers training, forums and events for solicitors who hold this higher court award.
Philip George, Managing Partner at Birkett Long, said: “This is a notable achievement for Liz. She is one of the very few solicitors in Essex to be a member of SAHCA and this qualification will be a real asset to her and the firm.”
